Security Tracking of Office Property

Permanently Secured Identification Device:

Laptops, personal computers, laboratory, office, and stereo equipment are permanently marked with a patented security device.

  • A security plate is sealed to the surface (requiring up to 800 pounds of force to remove).
  • The plate bears a unique ID number, a message, and an 800 number to call for ownership verification and anti-theft information.
  • An indelible tattoo, underneath the plate is automatically, chemically etched into the surface when sealing the plate.
  • A bright red police identifiable warning sticker adds to the deterrence effectiveness.
  • If a thief succeeds in removing the plate, a stolen property message permanently embedded on the surface of the equipment would be revealed with the security telephone number.
  • This device makes the computer and other valuable equipment worthless for thieves since it is virtually impossible to resell. It also allows rapid tracking of lost or misplaced equipment.

24-Hour Ownership Verification Database:

Each plate ID number is registered in the S.T.O.P. International Database, along with the equipment description (type, brand, model, serial number) and ownership information.

Fully transferable–simply reregister your information.

When the equipment is found, owner verification is quick and easy. If your equipment is lost or stolen, simply call University Stores and we can assist you in registering with the local police, the FBI, and INTERPOL.

Campus department orders may be placed by telephone, fax, and the Web requisitioning system or brought in to the counter.  University Stores will contact you within 24 hours after the order is placed.

Personal use orders (faculty, staff, students, alumni, and retirees) must brought in to the counter along with the equipment to be tagged.

Tips for Safeguarding Your Laptop:

Laptop computers are portable, concealable, and expensive. They also usually contain valuable information. This makes laptops a prime target for theft. There are several security measures you can take to protect your laptop.

Reminder: Although the STOP System is an effective theft deterrent, it is always a good idea to add your computer to your family’s homeowner insurance policy.

Office, Lab, Dorm:

  • Never leave your laptop unsecured and unattended (even for short durations).
  • Contact University Stores on how to register your laptop with the STOP program.
  • Write down make, model, and serial number in a separate location. The police will need this information in case your computer is lost or stolen.
  • Close and lock your door.
  • Lock the laptop in a drawer or file cabinet.
  • Use a security device. (Cable, lockdown or operation identification--to view University Stores   security devices, search our catalog with the keyword "security").
  • If you bring the laptop with you, never leave it unattended.
  • Report suspicious individuals and activities to local authorities immediately.
